Next drive November 19th

Are you on Face book: check out our page search kapiti region MX5

Saturday 14th October, 2017.

0800 hours. Top Down all the way to Hawera!

We followed Keith and Sharon to ' The Woolshed', on the outskirts of Sanson. The Woolshed was a large renovated, strong building, well appointed with polished wood floors, a log burner, lots of cottage windows, allowing plenty of light. The array of fresh food was great, delicious muffins, scones & cabinet food, along with a menu.  There was a separate area for groups. The staff were bright and friendly. Plenty of parking too!  Our group grew to six cars.

After our caffeine fix, we were ready to assemble and drive the back roads, skirting Ohakea.  It had always been a main road.  Great to see the other side of life!

We continued in a well behaved convoy......through the back roads to East Whanganui.  All I had to do was to follow that RED MX5 in front of me!

Nice easy drive for me did get two very quick views of Mt. Ruapehu.

Gathered in the hot mid day heat for a welcome comfort stop in Waverley.  Waverley was always a 'quick Blink'. Good to stop. The cars all looked great, especially the RED ONE, my leader.

Great views of Mt. Taranaki as we drove the long straight roads through Patea.

Next target was Tawhiti Museum. The Cafe could not cater for us, so we ventured to the  " Black & White Cafe'. My seat at the lunch table provided a spectacular view of the Mountain out of one window, and out of another window the splendid sight of our cars lined up. Adequately fed and watered we proceeded back to the Museum.  One of the highlights of our visit to the Museum was the paid entry into the interesting and well crafted, life like scenes and boat ride which took us through the history and times of..................  The Whalers life and times were also charted.  The display had been designed and built by Weta Workshop, a significant investment, which was educational and interesting.  A collection of well kept Tractors and farm machinery brought our visit to a close.  The staff were knowledgeable.

Next stop, The Mountain View Motel. Hawera.

In the warm afternoon sunshine, members gathered for afternoon tea and liquid refreshments. It was there the cars were the topics of conversation and interest.  Bonnet's up, tops down, boot lids up, keys inspected, glove boxes opened, tyre treads inspected.  I thought I had  ' gone to Heaven' !  Late afternoon, the last of the soft sunlight spread it's rays generously over the sitting / BBQ area.  The BBQ was lit, the prepared food arrived. I went to Heaven again that day as the conversation and food was another match for a great day!

An ' after dinner walking group' was established. 5 of us walked bravely and briskly into the now cool breeze and setting sun.  Oh dear, I just knew the heart of the group would contain fast walkers......I summoned up the courage to ask when turning for home would be a good idea....... relief.....amid joking and laughing, and more joking and laughing, we  reached the town centre, passing well stocked op-shops, turning down unknown roads to reach our Motel.  The cold night air and darkened sky drew closely around us; I had no worries, I felt safe and cared for amongst my new found friends.  We had walked over 4km. We were refreshed and happy.

Sunday morning arrived quickly.  3 cars had individual destinations planned, so the remaining three cars headed off to the Black and White cafe, again, to enjoy varying degrees of nicely cooked breakfasts and final chats and goodbyes.

For Angela and I, it was our first 'one nighter'. We both loved the drive, the rich landscapes, stunning views, great company and food.

Thank you Sharon & Keith and the MX5'ers.

Lawrence Kirby & Angela Minton.
